Navakanta Barua

1926—2002

Navakanta Barua was a poet and novelist who pioneered modern poetry in Assamese. He translated Euripides' Alcestis as well as Pushkin's and Whitman's poems. Among his honors were the Sahitya Akademi award (1975) and the Padma Bhushan (1976). He was a professor of English at Cotton College, Guwahati, Assam.
