Frederick Bock

1916—1981
Poet and editor Frederick Stern Bock was born in 1916 in Newton, Iowa. He earned a BA at the University of Iowa and completed graduate work at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. Bock served as an associate editor for Poetry from 1955 until 1961; he lived in New York City until his failing health prompted him to return to Newton, where he died in 1981.

During his life, Bock published one volume of poems, The Fountains of Regardlessness (1961), and was at work on a second at the time of his death. The University of Iowa holds a selection of his papers. Poetry awards the Frederick Bock Prize in his memory.
