C. F. MacIntyre

Poet and translator Carlyle Ferren MacIntyre was born in Iowa and earned his PhD at the University of Marburg in Germany. His collections of poetry include Cafés and Cathedrals (1939), The Black Bull (1942), and Tiger of Time and Other Poems (1965). Well-known as a translator of poets such as Baudelaire, Goethe, Rilke, and Verlaine, MacIntyre’s books of translation include French Symbolist Poetry (1958),which was republished in a special 50th anniversary edition in 2007. MacIntyre received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and Fulbright Commission to work on translations and taught for many years at UCLA and the University of California-Berkeley. He died in Germany.
