Ask Asklepius

Asklepius: the god of medicine.
Asklepius had a daughter who was the goddess of universal remedy: Panacea.

chorus
We all have mothers and fathers
and sometimes we must scrub ourselves clean —

Asklepius had a daughter who was the goddess of cleanliness: Hygeia.

When you say the k of his name, you are touching
the back of your lingual apparatus to your velum

chorus
the parchment you write on with your tongue —

How much history was saved in sound
across all these unrecorded years?

Asklepius they say had his ears licked clean by a snake
and while the snake was licking the snake was whispering secrets.

chorus leader
  Healing.
  Resurrection.

I don’t know
how old these columns are, but the temple outside this frame
is at least 6,000 years old

chorus leader
a black bag of time I cannot crawl into or out of —

I do know
we each had mothers’ and fathers’ mothers and fathers
on earth at that time, and

here you are, a resurrection

“a face in the crowd, a petal

on a wet black bough”

wait —
           what?
                     wet

(with life)
