CHICAGO, September 1, 2022—The Poetry Foundation is proud to announce a new season of free programming in Fall 2022. Offerings include ongoing series of workshops, book clubs, and performances, as well as a new exhibition, and a year-long celebration.

Poetry from Anywhere
The fun begins in September with the first installment of the Open Door readings, a monthly series that highlights creative relationships in Chicago, including mentorship and collaboration. Plus, Open Door gets a fresh approach in October with Dreaming Ages, a multidisciplinary exploration of time, and the lessons and experiences of artists of different ages.

All are welcome to the Poetry Foundation Library’s long-running workshop series, Forms & Features, which offers online opportunities for people to learn about poetic forms and concepts, and apply them in their own practice. Audiences can get to know the creative work of workshop participants and of the visiting teaching artists who have been bringing their energy and expertise to the program at the Celebrating Forms & Features readings.

The Poetry Foundation introduced online events in response to the pandemic in 2020, and will continue to do so. Some programs, such as the Open Door readings, which have pivoted to in-person events, will be presented as hybrid events for the first time. Hybrid events will be offered in-person and via livestream. A recording of this event will be made available on the Poetry Foundation website after the event.

Poetry Up Close
The Poetry Foundation building reopened to guests this spring after two years of pandemic-related closure. Since once again welcoming visitors to its building at the corner of Superior and Dearborn, the Foundation is buzzing with offerings.

Visitors to the Foundation’s Gallery will have a new exhibition to explore in October 2022, with photographs by Diana Solís that documents poetry communities in Chicago from the 1970s–1990s. Young poetry lovers and their caregivers are invited to Poemtime, a weekly storytime that introduces poetry through fun, interactive readings, songs, and art projects.

From quiet contemplation in the Library to singing in verse, guests can visit the Poetry Foundation during opening hours:

  • Wednesday, Friday, Saturday: 11:00 AM–4:00 PM
  • Thursday: 11:00 AM–8:00 PM

Celebrating 110 Years of Poetry
October marks the 110th anniversary of Poetry magazine, which welcomed its new editor, Adrian Matejka, this spring. Founded by Harriet Monroe in 1912, Poetry has grown and evolved over the years; the small, passionate print magazine led to the Poetry Foundation of today, and the Foundation is excited to spend the next year celebrating that legacy.

Attendees of the 2022 Printers Row Lit Fest on September 10–11, 2022 can visit the Poetry Tent for a medley of Chicago poetry, sponsored by the Poetry Foundation, and a chance to subscribe to Poetry in time for the magazine’s 110th anniversary issue, which will be published in October.
